Dr. Rema

Rema Reynolds Vassar, PhD has dedicated her career to advocating for educational equity, focusing on supporting marginalized communities. Her work ensures that every student, regardless of background, has the tools and resources necessary to succeed in education. With expertise in educational leadership, school culture, and organizational development, Dr. Rema has worked in diverse educational environments, both locally and globally. She has trained and mentored educators, administrators, and counselors on critical issues related to race, gender, and class in schools. Her research emphasizes how policies and practices impact student achievement, with a particular focus on fostering equity and inclusion in marginalized communities. Rema Vassar has over 20 years of experience in K-12 education and has held roles such as teacher, counselor, and administrator. Currently, she is focused on improving the wellness of school communities by encouraging collaboration between students, parents, and educators. In addition, she serves on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees and teaches in the Educational Leadership program at Wayne State University. Vassar strongly believes in the transformative power of education. She works to create spaces where communities can unite to promote change, emphasizing inclusive leadership and equitable practices. Her research and presentations have taken her to over twenty countries, where she has inspired educational leaders to adopt inclusive practices in their schools. In 2021, Vassar founded Centering Black Children in Education (CBCE), a movement to support Black children’s academic and personal success. CBCE hosts an annual virtual conference that brings educators, parents, and community leaders together to discuss the challenges Black children face in education. The conference advocates for systemic change and provides a platform for resisting the marginalization of Black students. In addition to CBCE, Vassar founded Leading Well, a program dedicated to empowering Black women in educational leadership. The program offers resources, mentorship, and a supportive community to help these women succeed in their roles. She is also involved in the Sankofa Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships for students to pursue higher education. Vassar’s passion for education was instilled by her mother, who fostered a love of learning from a young age. This early influence continues to guide her efforts to create a more inclusive educational system where all students can flourish.
